Domestic violence can affect anyone. It is not a respecter of age, class, or color. Often ignored or excused, domestic violence left unchecked can harm and even destroy someone’s life. How can you know if it is happening to you or someone you love?
Abuse of any kind, whether physical or emotional, is something that should not be tolerated. If you have questions concerning domestic violence or abuse, feel free to contact LawQA; this website is willing and able to answer any legal questions you may have.
Signs of abuse:
- A fear of displeasing your spouse.
- A fear that you may do or say something that could lead to your spouse losing his temper, leading to violence or yelling.
- The belief that you cannot do anything right or pleasing for your spouse.
- A fear of talking about certain subjects because it may upset your spouse.
If you are being abused:
- Seek help from a hospital, the police, or a religious leader. Know the numbers so you can contact them quickly.
- Have a plan of escape. Whether a safe place in the house or at a friend’s house. Know where you can go before the abuse happens.
- Have a bag packed in case you need to leave quickly and keep it in the car or at a friend’s house.
- Have your kids prepared to leave at a moment’s notice. Create a code word to let them know the need to get out quickly.
Stop the cycle of abuse. The effects of abuse are lifelong and life changing. No one should have to go through it. Know the red flags that set your spouse off and be careful to stay away. Do not spend your life living in fear.
